In the beginning of the emerging biofeedback trend, I began designing and selling such equipment. We were listed in an early “Whole Earth Catalogs.” Those “alpha-wave machines” were essentially electronically augmented meditation trainers. To the best of my knowledge, our company, Psionics, was the first to sell them to the general public. So, those who wanted an “alpha wave machine” had no choice but me. And our ad had no photos.
The idea of fabricating little black boxes seemed abhorrent, so instead I handcrafted custom chassis. The enclosures for the electronic circuitry then served as a canvas for my artistic improvisations. Some of the chassis were made of chicken wire that was covered with cloth or paper mache and then decorated with whatever struck my fancy. Instead of functional labels for the volume control, switches, and input jacks, such accouterments were given odd names, which were only explained in the hand-typed, one-of-a-kind instructions.
